Rubel Blueberry
Rubel blueberry is one of the few true wild selections of blueberries that are available to gardeners. Rubel was discovered in the early 1900's, when contract pickers scoured the mountain sides, picking wild blueberries to be sold at markets and farm stands. The Rubel blueberry bushes that we grow and sell still have their same high anti-oxidant qualities that the original wild plants contained. Rubel, unlike newer cultivars, did not trade off the nutritive properties of its delicious fruit for qualities such as berry size, berry color and thinner skinned blueberries.
Rubel Blueberry not only is a exquisite small fruit plant, but is also a delightful hardy shrub to add to your landscape. Rubel blueberry grows to 5 to 6 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide. A nicely branched blueberry bush, in the summer Rubel has glossy green foliage that turns bright red in the fall. The smaller blueberries are borne in clusters and are easy to pick. Rubel produces fruit in the mid-summer and continues producing berries for about 4 weeks depending on the weather. For best blueberry production always plant 2 or more blueberry bushes within 20 feet of each other.
