Organic Vegetable Gardening

Introduction to Organic Vegetable Gardening:

Organic Vegetable gardeningPrior to the 19050's, before the mass introduction of chemicals into the home's of gardeners everywhere, people grew organic gardens, even if they didn't realize it. For those of us that have our own organic vegetable gardens and fruits orchards you come to the realization that maintaining a garden is not a chore, but simply a very pleasant addition to daily life.

If you are new to organic vegetable gardening , you are in for a pleasant surprise. Rather than looking at weeding as a chore, at our farm we stroll out to the gardens before dinner and pick a basket of fresh vegetables and herbs, pulling a stray weed along the way. In the morning, cut a bouquet of fresh flowers and herbs, while trimming back spent blooms and herbs before they go to seed. In the late summer, as the garden really starts to produce, throw a canning party and make your own salsa or hot and spicy beans, to be enjoyed in the dead of winter when garden fresh produce from your own yard is not available.

Probably the most confusing notion for new gardeners, especially those choosing to grow organically, is there are no rules, or a right or wrong way to do something. You will find that reading a few good articles to get you started, or talking with other gardeners is a great asset, but don't discount the old learn by trail and error method.

One year one of our customers grew her first vegetable garden several years ago. After hours and hours of questions about how to grow mesclun and salad greens, she went off to start seeding her garden. Later that summer we ran into each other, and she laughed, recounting how she planted all of her salad green seeds at the same time, and ended up with pounds and pounds of mesclun and other greens, far more than her large family could ever eat. Thankfully the senior center was quite appreciate of her fresh greens! The moral is don't stress, seeds are relatively inexpensive and once you plant enough of something to feed a nation, next time you will know who much to plant.
