Since I first wrote about these delicious strawberries several years ago,  they have grown in Alpine Strawberry Plantspopularity amongst gardeners and chefs alike. Alpine strawberries come in several different varieties but I have found the 'Mignonette' variety to be the sweetest, and hardiest of the Alpine Strawberry cultivars.

Alpine strawberries are a very versatile strawberry plant that can tolerate both heat and cold; our farm is located in Eastern Oregon in a USDA hardiness zone 5 and they thrive in our cold, snowy winters and hot summers, likewise my mom lives in Arizona where these petite, delicate berries thrive and produce for her ten months a year.

Tips for Growing Alpine Strawberries:

  1. Plant in full sun and well drained soil. If you live in the southern states situate your planting bed to provide shade in the hot afternoon which will keep your plants producing.
  2. Fertilize with a low-nitrogen organic fertilizer. We use Down to Earth All Purpose fertilizer as a slow release and follow up with Maxicrop during the peak production times for an extra boost.
  3. Water on a regular basis. During the summer when the temperatures are in the 90-100's we water every day. Water in the early morning and avoid overhead watering if possible.
  4. Shear back your plants if they become leggy or to promote more growth. We have found that Alpine strawberries like to be sheared back by about half and will resprout new, lush growth in a week or two.
  5. During the winter if you live in a cold area that receives freezing temperatures you can mulch with 'clean' straw to protect the crowns of the plant. In warmer climates do not mulch plants.
